DEMIGNY / SAÔNE-ET-LOIRE / POLITICS and MUTUAL INSURANCE - JEAN BARBERET (*). PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1890 / 1900, three-quarter-length portrait, by OTTO & FIERE in Paris – Albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size: 10.5 x 6.4 cm. ( * ) Jean Joseph Barberet: born in Demigny on 9 March 1837, died in Paris on 3 March 1920. Journalist, socialist politician, and Commune-era trade unionist who laid the foundations for cooperatives and the labour movement – in 1870–71, contributor and later editor of the newspaper *La Marseillaise*, commander of the National Guard – in 1873, a follower of Léon Gambetta, he wrote articles on workers’ organisations for Victor Hugo’s “Le Rappel”. In 1876, it was under his influence that the first French workers’ congress was held in Paris. In 1920, he was honorary director of the mutual insurance scheme at the Ministry of the Interior.
