AMBOISE (37) / POLITICS - FRANÇOIS CANTAGREL ( * ) - PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1870, three-quarter-length portrait, by OTTO & FIERE in Paris - Albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 10.5 x 6.4 cm. ( * ) Félix François Jean Cantagrel: born on 27 June 1810 in Amboise, died in Paris on 27 February 1887 – Journalist, politician; holder of a law degree and a diploma from the École des Ponts et Chaussées, specialising in architecture – He founded the newspaper *La Phalange*, which was later renamed *La Démocratie Pacifique* – from 1869 to 1871 he was editor of the newspaper *L’Union Démocratique* in Nantes. He wrote articles on Paris, freedom of labour, abandoned children… Member of Parliament for Loir-et-Cher in 1849–1850. Stripped of his seat for taking part in the protests against Louis Napoléon Bonaparte on 13 June 1849, he went into exile in Belgium from 1849 to 1854, then to Texas, where he founded a Fourierist (utopian socialist) colony called ‘La Réunion’ (1854–56), and subsequently to Switzerland (1858–59) - He returned to France in 1859 following an amnesty and took up a post with the Paris Gas Company. He went on to serve as a Paris city councillor (1871–1876) and as a Member of Parliament for the Seine (1876–1887). -
