VENDÉE / POLITICS – CLEMENCEAU “FATHER OF VICTORY” ( * ) – PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1880, full-face bust portrait, by TRUCHELUT “Photographie Universelle”, Paris. Bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 10.5 x 6.3 cm. ( * ) - Georges Clémenceau: born on 28 September 1841 in Mouilleron-en-Pareds, Vendée; died in Paris on 24 November 1929 - Statesman, doctor – a radical republican, anticlerical and atheist, he advocated the separation of church and state and opposed colonisation. Founder of the newspaper *La Justice*, he worked at *L’Aurore* and played an active role in the defence of Captain Dreyfus. - Mayor of the 18th arrondissement of Paris, then President of the Paris City Council from 1906 to 1909 and from 1917 to 1920 - Member of the National Assembly for the Seine from 1871 to 1893 - Elected Senator for the Var from 1902 to 1920 - Appointed Minister of the Interior in 1906; nicknamed “the tiger” for his tenacity and ferocity in political battles. He called himself “France’s number one cop” and cracked down harshly on strikes. In 1906 he also became Prime Minister; in 1913 he founded the newspaper *L’Homme Libre*. In 1917 he formed a government committed to continuing the war and advocating total victory over Germany. In 1919, he secured the passing of the Eight-Hour Act; in 1920, he left the government and withdrew from political life. He was a member of the Académie Française from 1918 to 1929.
