AUXERRE / POLITICS – PAUL BERT ( * ) – PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1860, portrait, full-face bust, by TRUCHELUT, ‘photographie universelle’, Paris. Albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 10.5 x 6.3 cm. Paul BERT ( * ): born on 19 October 1833 in Auxerre and died on 11 November 1886 in Hanoi. Doctor, physiologist and politician. He studied the physiology of respiration at high altitudes and whilst diving, and took an interest in transplantation and anaesthesia. Elected as a Radical MP for the Yonne from 1872 to 1886. An anticlerical, he supported Jules Ferry’s laws on compulsory education; he succeeded him as Minister for Education and Religious Affairs from 1881 to 1882. He was a supporter of the colonisation policy. In January 1886, he was appointed High Commissioner of Annam–Tonkin, where he died of cholera. Numerous streets and schools bear his name.
