CHARENTE MARITIME / POLITICS – SAMUEL PROSPER ( * ) – PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1855/1860, full-length portrait facing the viewer, by DISDERI in Paris. Albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 9.8 x 6.2 cm. ( * ) Justin Napoléon Samuel Prosper, Count and later 4th Marquis of CHASSELOUP-LAUBAT, politician born in Alexandria, Italy, on 29 May 1805 (godparents: Napoléon and Joséphine), died in Paris on 29 March 1873. He studied at the Lycée Louis le Grand. Following the 1830 revolution, he served as an aide-de-camp to General La Fayette, commander of the National Guard. In 1836, he served as deputy to J.J. Baude, the King’s Commissioner in Algeria, in Algiers, then in Tunis, Bône and Constantine – Member of the Council of State in 1838 – Elected Member of Parliament for Charente-Inférieure in 1837, re-elected four times until 1873 – Minister for the Navy and the Colonies from 1859 to 1867. He transformed the sailing navy into a steam-powered navy; he founded the Naval Orphanage - Minister and President of the Council of State from 1869 to 1870 - Senator from 1862 to 1870 - President of the Geographical Society from 1864 until his death – Regular contributor to the *Revue des Deux Mondes* – A statue of Chasseloup-Laubat stands in Marennes (17).
