ARDÈCHE / DRÔME / POLITICS – DESIRÉ BANCEL ( * ) – PHOTOGRAPH, 1869, full-length close-up portrait from the front – Work by LEGE, former partner at CARJAT & Cie / Paris. - Albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 10.5 x 6.4 cm. ( * ) François Désiré Bancel: politician born and died in LAMASTRE / ARDÈCHE, 12 February 1822 / 23 January 1871 – Lawyer and university lecturer – Member of Parliament for the Drôme in 1849 during the Second Republic. Opposed to Louis Napoléon Bonaparte, he was exiled to Belgium in 1851 alongside Victor HOGO, Mathieu de la Drôme, Madier de Montjau… After the armistice of 1869, he became a Republican Member of Parliament, opposed to the war with Prussia. His bronze statue stands in front of Valence-Drôme railway station. It bears a plaque inscribed with an excerpt from his farewell speech: “Citizens, I have been elected by Paris and Lyon, but my heart remains in Valence.” - Member of Parliament for the Rhône: 1869–1870 - Member of Parliament for Drôme: 1849–1852. The town of Valence, in addition to the statue in front of the station, has named a boulevard after him, whilst the towns of Lamastre, Lyon and Melun have named streets after him.
