( * ) François Vincent RASPAIL: born on 24 January 1794 in Carpentras, died in Arcueil on 7 January 1878 – Chemist, botanist, biologist, politician. Founder of CYTOCHEMISTRY and a form of folk medicine: ‘the Raspail method’. Throughout his life, he closely intertwined his roles as a scholar, entrepreneur and left-wing political activist.
He entered the seminary in Avignon in 1810, where he became a professor of theology. In 1813, he became librarian at the college in Carpentras. To escape the ‘White Terror’ of 1815 in Provence, he resumed his law studies in Paris between 1816 and 1820. From 1824 to 1832, he studied the natural sciences and wrote articles on animals and plants. On 27, 28 and 29 July 1830, he took part in the ‘Three Glorious Days’, which led to the fall and exile of King Charles X. He founded the opposition newspaper *Le Réformateur* and chaired the society *Les Amis du Peuple*, denouncing the suffering of the working class. He achieved international renown with his works *Essai de chimie microscopique* (1830), *The New System of Organic Chemistry* (1833). In 1843, he published his *Natural History of Health and Disease* and his handbook *The Family Doctor*. As a doctor to the poor, he was a champion of hygiene and antisepsis.
At the time of the 1848 revolution, he was one of the first, following Karl Marx, to proclaim the republic. He founded *L’Ami du Peuple*. Elected as a Member of Parliament for Paris in September, he stood as a candidate in the 1848 presidential election; this was the first national-level candidacy based on a working-class and socialist platform. The election was won by Louis Napoleon Bonaparte. He voted against the declaration of war on Prussia. Elected as a Member of Parliament for Marseille in 1866, he was re-elected as a Member of Parliament for the Bouches-du-Rhône constituency in 1869. In 1875, at the age of 82, he was re-elected as a Member of Parliament for Marseille.
The father of five children, his four sons left their mark on history.
