EASTERN PYRENEES / POLITICS – EMMANUEL ARAGO ( * ) – PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1869 – close-up frontal bust, by CH. REUTLINGER. Albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 10.6 x 6.3 cm. ( * ) Emmanuel ARAGO: son of the scientist François Arago, born and died in Paris on 6 August 1812 / 26 November 1896 – a Republican lawyer, notably the defence counsel for Amand Barbès. Appointed government commissioner (prefect) in Lyon in 1848. As Minister Plenipotentiary in Berlin, he resigned when Louis Napoléon Bonaparte was elected President of the Republic. Member of Parliament for the Pyrénées-Orientales on three occasions: 1848–1851, 1871–1876 and 1876 to 1896 – Member of Parliament for the Seine in 1869–1870 - Minister for Justice and then, replacing Gambetta, Minister of the Interior in the Government of National Defence 1870–71 - Member of the Legislative Assembly from 1871 to 1876 - Senator for the Pyrénées-Orientales from 1876 to 1896 - Ambassador to Bern, Switzerland, from 1880 to 1894.
