VAR / VAUCLUSE / SARTHE / POLITICS – LEDRU ROLLIN ( * ) – PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1860 – close-up bust in profile, by BACARD, son-in-law and successor to THIEBAULT. Albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 10.6 x 6.3 cm. ( * ) Alexandre Ledru-Rollin: born on 2 February 1807 in Paris, died in Fontenay-aux-Roses (Hauts-de-Seine) on 31 December 1874 - At the age of 22, he became a barrister at the Paris Bar and made a name for himself through his pleadings on behalf of republican journalists. Elected as a Member of Parliament for the Sarthe constituency in 1841. He published a manifesto in 1846 in which he called for universal suffrage, a move that led to a high-profile trial. He campaigned for social and economic reforms to tackle the poverty of the people. In 1843, he founded the newspaper *La Réforme*. During the provisional government of 1848, he became Minister of the Interior. A staunch opponent of slavery, he persuaded François Arago and, together with him, signed the decree of abolition on 27 April 1848. He also took charge of the fine arts and museums and established “the Salon”, the annual Paris art exhibition. He was elected Member of Parliament for the Seine and, in 1849, for the Var. Condemned to exile under Napoleon III, he was absent from France from 1849 to 1870. He was elected Member of Parliament for the Vaucluse from 1871 to 1874. His stone statue adorns the façade of Paris City Hall, and a bronze statue stood on what is now Place Léon Blum until 1941 (melted down by the Nazis); an avenue and a metro station bear his name, as do streets in numerous towns and cities across France. In La Ferté-Bernard, a school bears his name.
