( * ) GEORGE SAND (pen name), AURORE DUPIN, BARONESS DUDEVANT by marriage: novelist, playwright, letter-writer, literary critic, journalist, painter, born in Paris on 1 July 1804, died at the Château de Nohant Vic on 8 June 1876. She wrote 70 novels and 50 other works: short stories, fairy tales, plays and political essays. George Sand championed women’s rights, advocated passion, lambasted marriage and fought against the prejudices of a conservative society. She caused a scandal due to her turbulent love life and her masculine style of dress. She was friends with Franz Liszt, Frédéric Chopin, Marie d’Agoult, Honoré de Balzac, Gustave Flaubert, Eugène Delacroix—who painted her portrait—and others… She maintained an extensive correspondence with Victor Hugo. – She had various lovers; Alfred de Musset was the one who mattered most to her.
