LOCHES / CHAMPAGNE de BLANZAC / Touraine & Charente – ALFRED de VIGNY ( * ) PHOTOGRAPH by Félix NADAR, taken in 1856. Portrait, close-up of Vigny seated in profile – albumen print mounted on card with a red border, visiting-card size 10.3 x 6.3 cm, signed ‘N’ in the bottom right-hand corner; on the reverse: ‘NADAR, photographer at the Grand Hôtel’. ( * ) Alfred Victor de Vigny, Count of Vigny: born on 7 Germinal, Year V (27 March 1797) in Loches, Indre-et-Loire; died in Paris on 17 September 1863 - Writer, novelist, playwright, poet, and an influential figure in French Romanticism and the historical novel. He wrote whilst pursuing a military career that began in 1814 and published his first poems in 1826 – after 15 years in the army without seeing combat, he left garrison life to move in Parisian literary circles, in particular those of Victor Hugo.- Elected to the Académie Française in 1845. He spent part of his time outside Paris at his manor house in MAINE-GIRAUD in Champagne-de-Blanzac (renamed Champagne-Vigny in 1983) near Angoulême. Numerous streets across France bear his name; three secondary schools – two statues have been erected in Loches and Cambrai – and an Alfred de Vigny fountain flows in Pau.
