ANNECY / LITERATURE / POLITICS – EUGENE SUE ( * ) – TWO PHOTOGRAPHS, circa 1850, albumin bromide prints mounted on card, visiting-card size – Profile bust by FRANCK, 18 Rue Vivienne, Paris (10.5 x 6.2 cm) + seated portrait, right elbow resting on a table, full face, photograph by Légé & Bergeron, former partners of Carjat, 56 Rue Laffitte. 10.4 x 6.2 cm. ( * ) EUGENE SUE: born on 26 January 1804 in Paris. Died in exile on 3 August 1857 in Annecy-le-Vieux, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. A writer best known for his two serialised novels, *Les Mystères de Paris* and *Le Juif errant*. His father was a surgeon in the Imperial Guard; his godfather and godmother were Eugène de Beauharnais and Empress Joséphine. He studied at the Lycée Condorcet. He became a naval surgeon. A 26-year-old dandy, he inherited his father’s fortune, which he squandered; he became the lover of the most beautiful women in Paris and was nicknamed ‘Le Beau Sue’. - Author of 7 exotic and maritime novels, 11 novels of manners, 10 historical novels, 15 social novels, 2 collections of short stories, 8 political works, 17 plays and 6 miscellaneous works; some of his works were placed on the Index by Rome, condemned by the bishops of France, and the author was harassed by the police; some works were seized and destroyed for undermining the morals of the time... Eugène Sue, a freethinker and Socialist Member of Parliament for the Seine, elected in 1850 and 1851, was sentenced to exile by the Second Republic under Louis Napoleon Bonaparte.
