( * ) E. RENAN: born on 27 February 1823 in TREGUIER / Côtes-du-Nord, died in Paris on 2 October 1892 – writer, philologist, philosopher, epigraphist and historian. A significant part of his work is devoted to religions, particularly the history of the origins of Christianity (7 volumes, 1863–81), which provoked the wrath of the Catholic Church. In his writings, he also explores his interest in his native BRITTANY. A leading intellectual of the 19th century. He came first in the agrégation examination in philosophy in September 1848. He was subsequently sent on missions to Italy and England (1851–52); in 1856 he became a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres; in 1860 he undertook an archaeological mission to Lebanon and Syria. Appointed professor of Hebrew at the Collège de France in 1862, he was suspended four days after his inaugural lecture for insulting the Christian faith and because of his work *The Life of Jesus*, which was deemed sacrilegious. His book caused a scandal but was a great success. - In 1878, he was elected a member of the Académie Française - He served as president of the ‘Société Asiatique’ (1884–1892); as a trustee at the Collège de France (1883–1892); president of the ‘Paris Linguistic Society’ (1867); and president of the scholarly, historical and archaeological society ‘Société des Antiquaires de France’ (1864).
