LOIRET / JOURNALISM and LITERATURE – LOUIS VEUILLOT ( * ) – TWO PHOTOGRAPHS, circa 1865, albumin bromide prints mounted on visiting-card-sized cardboard: Standing in profile, full-length; the reverse of this photograph is blank but it is by Pierre PETIT, a photographer in Paris; plus a head-and-shoulders portrait facing the viewer by HERMET, Maunoury’s successor on Rue Jacob, Paris. ( * ) Louis VEUILLOT: born in BOYNES / Loiret on 11 October 1813, died in Paris on 7 April 1883. Opinion journalist and man of letters. A devout Catholic, he championed private education and took over the newspaper ‘L’Univers’ (1839 to 1879). The son of a cooper, he devoted every spare moment to his studies and, at the age of 17, became an editor at a newspaper in Rouen, then at the “Mémorial de la Dordogne” in Périgueux. Having made a name for himself, he was called to Paris to work as a journalist. Whilst travelling in Rome, he converted and vowed to devote himself to the cause of Catholicism. He wrote several works dedicated “to showing the beauty he saw in Catholic doctrine and life”. In 1841, he accompanied General BUGEAUD, who had been appointed Governor-General, to ALGERIA. His travels and daily life inspired his written work: 22 volumes on history, politics and literature, as well as novels and poetry inspired by his religious beliefs. His nephew, François Veuillot, published his extensive correspondence (12 volumes).
