VALENCE / DROME / LITERATURE & THEATRE - EMILE AUGIER ( * ) - TWO PHOTOGRAPHS, circa 1865, albumen bromides mounted on card in visiting-card format: front view of the bust, signed CH. REUTLINGER + full-length close-up from the front, ‘alliance des arts’, Rue de Rivoli, photograph by MARCHANT in Paris. ( * ) Guillaume, Victor, Emile AUGIER: born on 17 September 1820 in Valence, Drôme; died in Croissy-sur-Seine, Yvelines, on 25 October 1889 – Poet, playwright, politician. He excelled at the Lycée Henri IV, then studied law at university – in 1844 his play *La Ciguë* was rejected by the Comédie-Française but enjoyed considerable success at the Odéon. In 1848, he became librarian to Henri d’Orléans, Duke of Aumale, the greatest art collector and bibliophile of his time (Château de Chantilly) – From 1848 to 1856 he served as a general councillor for the canton of Bourdeaux in the Drôme department – He was elected to Seat No. 1 of the Académie Française (1857 to 1889) – At the end of the Empire, he was appointed senator and served as a general councillor for Croissy-sur-Seine (1853 to 1856). - As an aside, in Valence, on Place de la République, stood the magnificent Émile Augier monument: his bronze statue atop a six-metre-high pedestal. The monument was unveiled on 1 August 1897 by Félix Faure, President of the Republic. It was melted down by the Nazis in 1942 to recover the metal.
