JOURNALISM / LITERATURE / POLITICS – EMILE de GIRARDIN ( * ) - TWO PHOTOGRAPHS, c. 1860, albumin bromides mounted on visiting-card-sized cardboard: two different full-length portraits by DISDERI in Paris, 10.5 x 6.2 cm. ( * ) Emile de Girardin, born Emile Delamothe. Born and died in Paris on 2 Messidor, Year X (21 June 1802) / 27 April 1881 – Journalist, writer, politician. Founder of the newspaper *La Presse* in 1836, a Parisian daily whose price he halved in order to increase circulation and, consequently, the number of advertising placements. He was also the first to publish serialised novels in his newspaper. At the age of 25, in 1827, he published his first novel, *Emile*. – In 1829, he was appointed assistant inspector of fine arts.... Journalistic career: in 1828, together with a former schoolmate from the Collège d’Argentan, he founded *Le Voleur*, a newspaper consisting of articles plagiarised from other newspapers. With the profits, he launched *La Mode*, which featured articles by Honoré de Balzac, Charles Nodier, A. de Lamartine and Eugène Sue. He also launched *Le Garde National*, *Le Journal des Connaissances Utiles* (1831) and *Le Musée des Familles* (1833). In 1836, he founded *La Presse*, a cheap daily newspaper in which advertising played as important a role as the editorial content. Political career: Member of Parliament for Creuse 1834–1839 and 1846–1848 – Member of Parliament for Tarn-et-Garonne 1842–1846 – Member of Parliament for the Bas-Rhin 1850–1851 – Member of Parliament for the Seine 1877–1881.
