MEDICINE / LITERATURE / POLITICS - EMILE LITTRE ( * ) - PHOTOGRAPHY, circa 1865. Frontal portrait signed CH. REUTLINGER in Paris – Albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size: 10.5 x 6.3 cm. ( * ) Maximilien Paul Emile Littré: born and died in Paris on 12 Pluviôse, Year IX (1 February 1801) / June 1881 – Physician, lexicographer, philosopher and politician. He is remembered for his ‘Dictionary of the French Language’, the ‘LITTRE’ – as a young man, he enlisted as a gunner in the navy. He spent his early childhood in Avranches, Angoulême and Cognac, and attended secondary school at Louis-le-Grand. He spoke Greek, Sanskrit, English, German, Italian and Latin… He finally decided in 1822 to study medicine. During the Revolution of 1830, he fought alongside the insurgents who overthrew Charles X. In addition to his dictionary, he published a great many books and articles in his various fields of expertise – politics, medicine and philosophy. He founded *La Revue de Philosophie*. Member of Parliament for the Seine, 1871–1876 - Life senator 1875–1881 - Held seat number 17 at the Académie Française 1871–1881 - Associate member of the Académie de Médecine in 1858.
