STRASBOURG / ILLUSTRATOR - GUSTAVE DORE ( * ) - PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1862. Frontal standing portrait of the young Doré by CARJAT, 56 Rue Laffitte, Paris. Albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 10.4 x 6.2 cm. ( * ) Gustave Doré: born on 6 January 1832 in Strasbourg, died in Paris on 23 January 1883. Illustrator, caricaturist, painter, lithographer and sculptor. His work as an illustrator was recognised worldwide during his lifetime as one of the most significant of the century. At the age of 15, in 1847, the *Journal du Rire* offered Doré a three-year contract to produce one page in every issue of this new weekly magazine. Doré thus created *Les Travaux d’Hercule*, the first comic strip in French publishing. Meanwhile, Doré continued his education at the Lycée Charlemagne in Paris. His second album was published in 1851. He also painted and exhibited his canvases, and produced a number of sculptures. He was invited to the court by Napoleon III. At the Salon, his first work, *L’Ange de Tobie*, was acquired by the state for 2,000 francs. Between 1852 and 1853, Doré published more than 120 volumes in France, as well as in Germany, England and Russia. From 1861 to 1866, his golden age, Doré set about illustrating the great works of literature (Dante’s Divine Comedy, Perrault’s Tales, Don Quixote, the Bible, etc.) - He died of a heart attack at the age of 51, leaving behind a vast body of work comprising over 10,000 pieces, which would influence countless illustrators. His friend, the future Marshal Foch, organised his funeral.
