His first work, published in 1840, *What is Property?*, is the one in which he popularised the phrase ‘property is theft’ - The only revolutionary theorist to have emerged from the working class; he was a typesetter. Proofreading allowed him to broaden his education, learn Hebrew, and improve his command of Greek and Latin. He passed his baccalaureate at the age of 19 and, through a competitive examination, won a scholarship awarded “to a young man of letters recognised as the most deserving in the department of Doubs” – in 1843 he moved to Lyon and became involved with workers’ mutual aid societies, where he met Karl Marx. He founded his own newspaper, *Le Représentant du Peuple*. He took part in the events of 1848 and was elected as a Member of Parliament from 4 June 1848 to 26 May 1849. On 28 March 1849, Proudhon was sentenced by the Assize Court to three years’ imprisonment and a fine of 3,000 francs for incitement to hatred …/… and for attacking the authority of the President of the Republic, Louis Napoléon Bonaparte…He was imprisoned at Sainte-Pélagie, from where he escaped to go into exile in Belgium. He continued his activities, founding ‘the People’s Bank’. He played a part in the founding of the First International. Proudhon had a direct and decisive influence on the French labour movement; he was the author of *Revolutionary Socialism*, the most widely translated author in Russia in the 19th century, to the extent that Tolstoy titled his novel *War and Peace* in homage to one of his works.
