ILLUSTRATOR AND CARICATURIST – HENRY MONNIER ( * ) – PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1860, full-length portrait, three-quarter profile, by DISDERI, 8 Boulevard des Italiens, Paris. Albumen print mounted on card, visiting-card size, 9.8 x 6.2 cm. ( * ) Henry Bonaventure Monnier: born and died in Paris, 7 June 1799 / 3 January 1877 - Caricaturist, illustrator, playwright and actor – After studying at the Lycée Bonaparte, he joined the Ministry of Justice as a clerk, which he left in 1822 to go to London, where colour lithography was undergoing significant development. He returned to France five years later and met Alexandre Dumas, Théophile Gautier, Stendhal, Eugène Sue, Prosper Mérimée, Scribe, Delacroix, Honoré de Balzac… who paved the way for his fame. Between 1827 and 1832, he produced numerous albums of lithographs capturing the customs and features of his contemporaries. From 1850 onwards, he devoted himself to writing and the theatre. The Académie Française awarded him the Prix Vitet in 1875 and the Prix Monbinne in 1879 (presented to his widow) – Henry Monnier served as a model for Balzac in numerous novels of *La Comédie Humaine*, of which he was one of the first illustrators.
