LITERATURE / POETRY – FRANÇOIS COPPÉE ( * ) – PHOTOGRAPH circa 1870. Three-quarter profile bust portrait signed CH. REUTLINGER in Paris. Albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 10.5 x 6.3 cm. ( * ) François Coppée: born and died in Paris, 26 January 1842 / 23 May 1908 – Poet, Playwright, Novelist – A popular and sentimental poet of Paris. His first published verses date from 1864. In 1876, the Académie Française awarded him the Prix Vitel for his entire body of poetic work. – Archivist of the Comédie Française from 1878 to 1884 - Elected to the Académie Française, occupying seat no. 10, from 1884 to 1908 – as a curious aside, a remontant hybrid rose was named ‘François Coppée’ and dedicated to him in 1895 by the Lédéchaux nursery. Many towns have named streets after him; in Paris, a school bears his name, and three of his novels have been adapted for the cinema.
