MUSIC / OPERA – FROMENTAL HALEVY ( * ) – PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1855/1860, full-length front-view portrait, signed CARJAT, 56 Rue Laffitte, Paris. Albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 10.4 x 6 cm. ( * ) Fromental Halévy: born on 27 May 1799 in Paris, died in Nice on 17 March 1862 – Composer. He studied piano and composition with the most renowned musicians of the time: Nicolas Méhul and Luigi Cherubini. He is best known for his operas and operettas. His most famous opera is *La Juive*, premiered in 1835 and regarded as one of the masterpieces of French opera. At the age of seven, he entered the Paris Conservatoire; in 1811, he joined Chérubini’s class; in 1814, he began teaching at the Conservatoire; in 1817, he was awarded the first second Prix de Rome, followed by the first Grand Prix in 1819 - He travelled to Rome and Naples in 1820, and to Vienna in 1822, where he met Beethoven; in 1827 he was appointed professor, became a vocal coach, and was appointed to the Théâtre Italien and the Opéra. In 1828 he was commissioned to write an opera; he would go on to compose thirty-six - Elected in 1836 to the Academy of Fine Arts, of which he became permanent secretary in 1854 – Many of his pupils went on to become famous: Charles Gounod, Victor Massé, François Bazin and Georges Bizet (who married his daughter).
