BRITTANY / FINISTÈRE / NAVY – ADMIRAL ROMAIN DESFOSSES ( * ) - PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1850 / 1860, portrait in civilian dress, standing facing the camera, signed ‘DISDERI’ in Paris – albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 9.7 x 6.2 cm. ( * ) Joseph Romain Desfossés: born in GOUESNOU / Finistère on 8 December 1798, died in Paris on 25 October 1864 - Admiral of France / Politician: he served as a Member of Parliament for the Bonapartist party in Finistère from 1849 to 1851 – Minister for the Navy in 1849 – Senator during the Second Republic and the Second Empire - He embarked as a ship’s boy at the age of 9 aboard the “Cassard”; at 12, he was a second-class cadet on the gunboat commanded by his father; in 1811, he became a cadet at the Brest Naval Academy - He served until 1864, enjoying a distinguished military career during which he took part in all the naval operations and campaigns of the era, particularly the colonial conquests. Having held every rank of officer and enjoyed a highly distinguished career, he was promoted to Admiral of France on 9 July 1860. - He also served as President of the Finistère General Council, President of the Paris Geographical Society, and President of the Association for Schools in the East.
