ANGERS / EDUCATION / POLITICS – ALFRED de FALLOUX ( * ) - PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1870 – Full-length frontal portrait, by DISDERI, ‘photographer to His Majesty the Emperor’, in Paris – Albumen print mounted on card, visiting-card size 9.8 x 6.1 cm. ( * ) Count Frédéric Alfred Pierre de Falloux du Coudray: born and died in Angers, 8 May 1811 / 6 January 1886 – Clerical journalist, writer and politician of the Legitimist movement. Elected in 1846 as Member of Parliament for Maine-et-Loire, re-elected in 1849; President Louis Napoléon Bonaparte appointed him Minister for Public Instruction and Religious Affairs (1849/1849). During his term of office, he secured the passage of the law bearing his name, which provided that members of the clergy and religious orders, both men and women, could teach without producing any qualifications other than a letter of obedience, whereas a university degree was required of lay teachers. Elected to the Académie Française 1856–1886. – A historian critical of the 1789 Revolution. He published his *History of Louis XVI* (1840), his *History of Saint Pius V* (1845), his *On the Counter-Revolution* (1876) and his *Memoirs of a Royalist*.
