CHARENTE / POLITICS - PAUL DEROULEDE ( * ) - PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1880. Close-up frontal portrait, seated, by CH. REUTLINGER, 21 Boulevard Montmartre, Paris. Albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 10.5 x 6.3 cm. ( * ) Paul Déroulède: born on 2 September 1846 in Paris, died in NICE on 31 January 1914 – Poet, chanson singer, playwright, novelist, political activist. A leading figure in the nationalist right-wing movement seeking revenge against Prussia. Founder of ‘the League of Patriots’ in 1882. Attempted a coup d’état in 1899. An anti-Semite, he opposed the Left, which he accused of seeking to “Judaise France”. He studied at the Lycée Louis le Grand, the Lycée Bonaparte and the Lycée de Versailles, and obtained a law degree. He distinguished himself during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871, for which he was awarded the Legion of Honour. He subsequently took part in the suppression of the Paris Commune. From then on, through his literary work and political activity, he came to embody the France of revenge, calling for the return of Alsace and Lorraine. He wrote the *Chants du soldat* (*Soldier’s Songs*), which sold over one hundred thousand copies, including *Le Clairon* (*The Bugle Call*), which brought him fame and remained on the school curriculum for many years. As leader of the “League of Patriots” and also of the anti-colonial party, he believed that colonial conquest was draining the energy France needed for the future war against Germany. He died of a bout of uraemia at his estate on Mont Boron; his remains were taken back to Paris, where the funeral procession was honoured by a crowd estimated at over one hundred thousand Parisians. Member of Parliament for CHARENTE 1889–1893 and 1898–1901.
