SAINT-ÉTIENNE / LITERATURE – JULES JANIN ( * ) – PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1870, close-up frontal bust, by NADAR, signed “N” in the bottom right-hand corner and “NADAR” on the reverse, with “Rue d’Anjou St Honoré 51 Paris” – albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 10.5 x 6.4 cm.
( * ) Jules Gabriel Hanin: born in Saint-Étienne on 16 February 1804, died in Paris on 19 June 1874.
Writer and theatre critic. Studied local history and attended the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris. After a spell working for a solicitor, where he was a ‘runabout’ alongside Honoré de Balzac, he became a journalist: *Revue de Paris*, *Revue des Deux Mondes*, *Le Figaro*, *La Quotidienne* – he was the founder of *La Revue de Paris*, “Le Journal des Enfants” – in 1829 he published his novel “L’âne mort et la femme guillotinée”, *La Confession* in 1830, and *Barnave* in 1831. He was an editor at *L’Élitiste*, then a critic at *Le Journal des Débats*, where he remained for 40 years –
he was nicknamed the “Prince of Critics”. -
Elected to Chair 28 (formerly held by Sainte-Beuve) at the Académie Française in 1870.
