AISNE / LITERATURE - ARSENE HOUSSAYE ( * ) - PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1870. Close-up frontal bust, by CH. REUTLINGER, 21 Boulevard Montmartre, Paris. Albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 10.5 x 6.3 cm. ( * ) François Arsène HOUSSET, pseudonyms Alfred Mousse, Arsène Houssaye: born on 28 March 1814 in BRUYERES and MONTBERAULT / Aisne, died in Paris on 26 February 1896. Man of letters – He ran away from home in 1832 to lead a bohemian life in Paris. He joined a troupe of travelling actors for whom he composed songs. He became friends with Théophile Gautier and Gérard de Nerval. He contributed to the magazine *L’Artiste*, of which he became editor in 1843. There he welcomed young writers, including Charles Baudelaire. He contributed to the *Revue des Deux Mondes* and *La Revue de Paris* – from 1849 to 1856, thanks to Rachel, he was appointed General Administrator of the Comédie-Française, where he introduced plays by Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas the Elder, Alfred de Musset… – in 1857 he was appointed chief inspector of provincial museums. He edited the daily newspaper *La Presse*: Baudelaire dedicated the prose poems of *Le Spleen de Paris* to him - In 1866, he became editor of the *Revue du XIXe Siècle* - In 1870, he founded *La Gazette de Paris*, and in 1887, the *Revue de Paris et Saint-Pétersbourg* - In 1884, he was elected President of the Société des Gens de Lettres - In 1863, he led the excavations at Amboise to locate Leonardo da Vinci’s tomb; he published the findings in 1864. - He published numerous works, trying his hand at all genres. At his funeral, Émile Zola described him, in his eulogy, as “one of the last great oaks of the Romantic forest”.
