AUTOGRAPH CARD / HAUTE-SAÔNE / LITERATURE – XAVIER de MONTEPIN (*). PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1860 / 1865, full-length close-up, signed on the reverse in pen: “DELAGRAVIERE, painter and photographer / 5 bis Rue de Rennes / next to the church / Paris”. Albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 10.2 x 5.9 cm. ON THE FRONT, BELOW THE PHOTOGRAPH, a handwritten and signed dedication in fine blue ink: “To Mr Sébastien Consable, affectionate regards from his most devoted X de Montépin”. ( * ) Count Xavier Henry Aymon de Montépin: born on 10 March 1823 in PREMONT / Haute-Saône and died on 30 April 1902 in Paris – Popular novelist. – Auditor at the École des Chartes. In 1848, he founded the newspaper *Le Canard* and contributed to two other counter-revolutionary newspapers: *Le Lampion* and *Le Pamphlet*. – As an author of serialised novels, he is notably the author of one of the bestsellers of the 19th century: *La Porteuse de Pain*, which appeared as a serial in *Le Petit Journal* from 15 June 1884 to 17 January 1885; it was subsequently adapted for the theatre, cinema and television. - *Le Médecin des Pauvres* (The Doctor of the Poor), published in 1861; *Les Veillées Parisiennes* (Parisian Evenings), in 1863, etc. He produced around 90 serialised novels. As an aside, his serial “Les filles de plâtre”, published in 1855, caused a scandal. It earned him a three-month prison sentence and a fine of 500 francs for obscenity.
