SAINTES / LITERATURE – JULES ANTOINE CASTAGNARY ( * ) – PHOTOGRAPH, circa 1870 – close-up, full-length, facing the camera, by CARJAT, 56 Rue Laffitte, Paris. Albumen bromide mounted on card, visiting-card size 10.5 x 6.1 cm. ( * ) CASTAGNARY: born in Saintes, Charente-Inférieure, on 11 April 1830; died in Paris on 11 May 1888 – Art critic and journalist – A friend and supporter of Gustave Courbet, he contributed to *Le Monde Illustré*, *Le Siècle* and *Le Nain Jaune*. He organised the republican press in the provinces during the siege of Paris in 1870 (*L’Époque* and *Le Peuple français*). He coined the term ‘Impressionist’. - In 1879, he became a member of the Council of State and a member of the Committee for Historic Monuments. - In 1887, he became director of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. - He was given a state funeral. A street and a square in Paris are named after him.
