HISTORICAL PHOTOGRAPH: “PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT (*) 1870/1871 BY ADOLPHE THIERS - Albumen print mounted on card, visiting card size 6.4 x 10.7 cm, photographic montage signed E. APPERT, 24 rue Taitbout, Paris. Captioned group portrait of the ministers, with Thiers standing in the centre behind the table. At the bottom of the margin, a handwritten caption listing the ministers pictured. ( * ) The Government of National Defence was formed in Paris during the Franco-Prussian War on 4 September 1870, following the capture of Napoleon III at the Battle of Sedan. The emperor’s deposition was pronounced, under pressure from the crowd at the Palais Bourbon, by the legislature, and the republic was proclaimed at the Hôtel de Ville. Gambetta persuaded Adolphe Thiers to head a government of national unity and defence of Paris.
