SAINT LO / NORMANDY - LITERATURE - OCTAVE FEUILLET ( * ) - TWO PHOTOGRAPHS circa 1870 – portrait seated on a table, full-length facing the camera, by DISDERI, the Emperor’s photographer; albumen bromides mounted on card, visiting-card size 9.7 x 6.2 cm. + Standing full-face portrait by FRANCK, 18 Rue Vivienne, Paris. 10.4 x 6.2 cm. ( * ) Octave Feuillet: Born on 10 August 1821 in Saint-Lô, died on 28 December 1890 in Paris - Novelist and playwright nicknamed ‘the Musset of the families’ - Member of the Académie Française, elected to seat 13 on 3 April 1862 - Distinguished academic record at the Lycée Louis le Grand. He wrote numerous novels which, from 1852 onwards, enjoyed great success; many of these were published in the prestigious *Revue des Deux Mondes*. In 1858, *Le roman d’un jeune homme pauvre* was very popular; in 1857, the play adapted from his novel *Dalila* was a triumph. The writer enjoyed the favour of the Court; his plays were first performed in Compiègne before moving to Paris; Empress Eugénie herself secured the role of Mme Pons in *Les Portraits de la Marquise* (1869) – He wrote tirelessly whilst living in retreat in his native Normandy, surrounded by his roses, for 15 years - In 1868, he was appointed librarian at the Palace of Fontainebleau - The fall of the Empire in 1870 came as a great shock to him, and his success began to wane - In Brittany and Normandy, and in various regions of France, numerous streets bear his name, as do a street and a secondary school in Paris, and an avenue in Tours - He and his wife are buried in Saint-Lô cemetery.
