BRITTANY / PONT AVEN - PHOTOGRAPH CIRCA 1880 - Close-up of a young man in traditional Pont-Aven costume - Remarkable albumen bromide photograph, mounted on card, WATERCOLOUR HIGHLIGHTING, very fine artistic work in various colours and gold - Visiting-card size: 10.5 x 6.2 cm - Anonymous work attributed to Joseph VILLARD, born in PLOUERMEL, Finistère, who died in QUIMPER on 16 March 1898. He was introduced to photography by his brother Jean Marie, a pupil of NADAR and Louis DAGUERRE in Paris. He travelled the length and breadth of Brittany on foot, then by bicycle, to photograph monuments and picturesque subjects. Over the years, he built up a substantial collection of photographic plates. His studio was at 42 Rue Kéréon in Quimper. His son took over the business and went on to become a leading publisher of postcards.
