EUGENE DEGAND (*), PHOTOGRAPHER IN NICE – ORIENTALIST SELF-PORTRAIT. Photograph, albumen print mounted on card, visiting card size 10.5 x 6.3 cm, a self-portrait of the painter-photographer in oriental dress, seated facing the camera and smoking a long pipe, on an oriental rug - Rich and delicate watercolour colouring, circa 1875/1880. On the reverse: beneath the monogram ‘ED’, ‘E. DEGAND, painter and photographer, Rue Pastorelli, behind the Millet boarding house, and Rue Paradis, NICE / PORTRAITS and views of Nice in all sizes’. ( * ) Eugène DEGAND: born in LILLE on 7 October 1829, died in NICE on 8 October 1911 – Trained as a painter under his father in Lille. He passed the entrance examination for the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1855 – in 1856 he left the school to travel to Algeria, via Marseille. He arrived in Algiers on 2 June 1856 and left again in January 1857. Whilst in Algeria, he produced several Orientalist paintings and preparatory drawings for his future works – He took part in eight art exhibitions between 1857 and 1868 (Paris, the Metz World’s Fair, the Toulouse School of Fine Arts, Lille, etc.) - From 1863 onwards, Emile Degand spent periods in Nice, where he opened a painting studio, followed by a photography studio. In 1870, his studio and home were located ‘behind the Millet boarding house’; he ran a shop with his wife at 6 Rue Paradis.
