FONTENAY-LE-COMTE / VENDÉE / POITIERS – SIX PHOTOGRAPHS from the early years of JULES ROBUCHON’s career ( * ) - Six albumin bromide prints mounted on card, visiting-card size, 9.8 x 6 cm, all signed on the reverse, including one with a handwritten signature in red ink - Beautiful regional scenes, a portrait of a bourgeois man in indoor attire, a society woman and painter posing with her painting, a man seated at his desk in profile writing, and three young women in traditional dress with various local headdresses, circa 1865–1870. Jules César Joël Robuchon: born in Fontenay-le-Comte, Vendée, on 30 October 1840; died in Poitiers, Vienne, on 14 February 1922 – bookseller, photographer, postcard publisher, sculptor. He turned to photography around 1860, working as a photographer in Paris. Returning to his hometown in 1861, he set up a photography and publishing studio there. In 1883, he embarked on the publication of *Paysages et monuments du Poitou*. This monumental work, comprising 13 volumes, was published in instalments by subscription. To this end, he travelled throughout the Vendée, Deux-Sèvres and Vienne departments. For this work, he was awarded a silver medal at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair. In 1898, he settled in Poitiers, where he founded the “Poitou Travel Information Association”, organised excursions and became a pioneer in the development of cultural tourism - After 1900, he devoted himself particularly to his work as a postcard publisher, selling his postcards from his shop and studio on Rue de Moulin à Vent in Poitiers. - On his death, his daughter Eugénie took over the photographic studio and continued to publish postcards under the name Robuchon until 1950.
