SARTHE / LE MANS & SURROUNDING AREA – MEMBERS OF THE BOURGEOISIE AND LOCAL NOBILITY, circa 1860–80. FOURTEEN PHOTOGRAPHS by “GUSTAVE” (Gustave Cosson) ( * ). Bromide prints mounted on card in visiting-card format (approximately 10.5 x 6.2 mm). Very fine ‘artistic’ portraits of elegant ladies in dress, young girls, handsome gentlemen, children… Various signature marks on the reverse depending on the period. ( * ) – Gustave COSSON: born in Saint-Dizier on 18 December 1824, died in Bar-le-Duc on 8 May 1896. A photographer who worked under the artistic name ‘GUSTAVE’, first in Paris from 1844 to 1855 at No. 35 Boulevard Bonne Nouvelle, then in Le Mans from 1856 until his death, initially at No. 6 Rue du Porc Epic, then, in 1859, at 6 Rue du Crucifix. His studio in Le Mans still stands; it is the last surviving 19th-century studio of its kind in France – a large, light-filled studio that set the standard for its type – and is now listed as a historic monument. His advertisement read: “Daguerreotype miniature portraits and photography on paper, on plate, on glass and on canvas. In a matter of seconds, whatever the weather, in a large, glass-fronted studio that is very well heated in winter. Likeness guaranteed, success assured. Executed by Gustave, painter and teacher”.
