TOURS – TWO PHOTOGRAPHS by BAILLY and MAURICE ( * ) – Two close-ups of ladies from Tours’ high society, one standing, the other seated, wearing very beautiful period dresses.
Two albumin bromide prints, circa 1860, mounted on card, 9.8 x 6.1 and 10.5 x 6.3 cm.
( * ) Jean Baptiste BAILLY 1803–1884: a native of Haute-Marne, he worked as a grocer in 1826, then as a watchmaker; in 1854 he served as a cavalryman in the 1st Chasseurs Regiment stationed in Tours.
On 1 December 1857, Bailly went into partnership with Jean Eugène MAURICE (1825–1891) to run a photographic studio at 6 Boulevard Béranger, opposite the Palais de Justice. It moved to number 14 in May 1869. By marrying Marie Claire Bailly in 1861, Maurice became his business partner’s son-in-law.
During the Second Empire, the Bailly & Maurice studio became the go-to place for the people of Tours who wanted their portraits taken.
