TOURS – FOUR PHOTOGRAPHS by AMBROISE DUVAL (*), circa 1875 / 1880. Four lovely portraits in visiting-card format, bromide prints mounted on card, 10.4 x 6.3 cm. One albumin bromide ‘hunter, man posing face-on with a rifle’ + 3 ‘enamelled’ style carbon bromides with a domed relief effect: babies in white dresses and embroidered bonnets + a woman in traditional Tours dress with a bonnet + a little girl straddling a stuffed horse. ( * ) Jean Ambroise Duval 1821–1894: photographer in Tours from 1866 to 1884. Born in Castillon-en-Auge, in 1845 he worked as a grain merchant in Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives. In 1850 he practised the daguerreotype process in Nantes and opened a branch in Angers in 1858. In 1859 he moved to Orléans, a studio which he sold in order to set up in Tours in 1866, initially at 7 Rue de Buffon. In May 1872, he moved his studio to 76 Rue Royale, with an entrance on 1 Rue de la Préfecture, where he remained until 1884.
