TOURS – PHOTOGRAPH BY EUGENE CHAUVIGNE (*), circa 1880. SISTERS, close-up frontal view of two sisters – bromide mounted on yellow card with red borders, visiting-card size 10.5 x 6.3 cm, ‘enamelled’ style preparation, carbon print, ‘domed’. ( * ) E. CHAUVIGNE 1837–1917 – Photographer in Tours, then in Amboise from 1875 to 1894, member of the French Photographic Society. Along with Gabriel Blaise, he was one of the greatest professional photographers from Tours in the 19th century. He is particularly well known for his photographic studies of flowers. His father ran an inn at ‘Saint Etienne Extra’ before the village was incorporated into Tours. He then worked as a gilder with his brother in their shop on Rue Royale. In 1875, the two brothers changed careers. Auguste, a great admirer of Palissy, became a talented painter and ceramist in the style of Avisseau, whilst Eugène became a photographer and opened a studio at 15 Rue d’Entraigues; he extolled its merits in the local press: “a specialist studio for portraits of all sizes, religious subjects, family group portraits, views of estates, photography using fade-proof carbon printing, instant cameras for children, enamelled cards, and specialising in studies of flowers from life which can serve as drawing models for students and artists”. In 1877, he provided the photographic illustrations for Charles Guignard’s book *Medicinal Plants Photographed from Life*. He took part in numerous exhibitions, where he won medals. In 1892, he closed his studio and moved to Amboise, where he devoted himself to his other passion: painting.
