A particularly eventful year: the year of the Spanish Civil War and the arrival of General FRANCO; in France, the year of the POPULAR FRONT and its social revolution. A wealth of reports on the fierce fighting in Spain, accompanied by a wealth of photographs from special correspondents. Accurate news coverage detailing the progression of the conflicts and suffering, the major battles, the bombings, aid from Germany, the fierce fighting, and Fascist Italy arming the Spanish rebels. But also coverage of everyday life: the Tour de France cycle race and its stages, the Paris–Lille cycle race, crime and legal news, the retirement age, major workers’ demonstrations, the 14 July 1936 celebrations, strikes, the need to control armaments in the face of German and Italian rearmament, and major news stories… ( * ) LE POPULAIRE: a socialist and internationalist newspaper founded on 1 May 1916. Jean Longuet, grandson of Karl Marx, was its first political editor. Renamed LE POPULAIRE de PARIS, it was edited by Léon Blum. Following the German invasion, *Le Populaire* ceased publication. It was revived from the summer of 1944 to the summer of 1946, a period during which, with a circulation of 263,000 copies, it was one of the leading Parisian daily newspapers. In the 1960s, its difficulties increased and it ceased publication on 28 February 1970.
