ST ANTOINE du ROCHER (37) – THE RAILWAY DISASTER ( * ) of 29–30 JULY 1925 – “the locomotive after the tender was removed – the ‘+’ marks the spot where the engine driver was killed” - Spectacular animated extreme close-up – postcard L.R. 9 ( * ) During the night of 29–30 July 1925, at midnight, on the Le Mans to Tours line, a train operated by the Paris-Orléans Railway Company derailed at full speed whilst passing over a passing loop. The locomotive left the tracks and, after striking the parapet of a bridge, tumbled into the stream below – a fall of 4 metres. In addition to the engine driver, Mr Gorce, 16 passengers were killed and 19 injured. The accident caused a national outcry, prompting the Minister for Public Works, Mr Pierre Taval, to travel to the scene the very next day on the Paris express.
