Description
Gabriel ALLEGRAIN (Paris, 1679 – 1748): “Landscape with washerwomen near a fountain, at the foot of an ancient sculpture” & “Landscape with an ancient sculpture” Pair of canvases, 98.5 x 179 cm. Previous restoration work. Expert: Cabinet Turquin. Gabriel Allegrain was the son of the painter Etienne Allegrain, under whom he trained. He specialised in landscape painting, often inspired by nature and featuring figures, and became a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1716, thanks to his painting *The Flight into Egypt* (Bordeaux Museum of Fine Arts). He exhibited several landscapes at the Paris Salon between 1737 and 1747. His style follows the tradition of early 18th-century French landscape painting. Here, the artist appears to have populated his landscapes with two well-known sculptures: Nicolas COUSTOU, *La Seine*, 1699–1712, Louvre Museum (MR 1801) and François GIRARDON, *Apollo Served by the Nymphs*, 1666–1674, collections of the Palace of Versailles (MR 1866.0).
