Japan, Tokyo School, Meiji period (1868–1912). A fine ivory okimono depicting a young peasant girl walking, carrying a basket of peonies on her back, holding a large chrysanthemum flower in her hand, her obi adorned with stylised phoenixes in slight relief, and her feet clad in getta. Signed Dôraku in a cartouche on the base. Height: 25.5 cm. Weight: 837.5 g. With its CIC CITES certificate. Expert: ANSAS, PAPILLON & DE LERY. Note: The sculptor Dôraku (Yoshida Dôraku) is listed in a Japanese publication by the Shôtô Museum, *Nihon no zoge bijutsu: Tokubetsuten, Meiji no zoge chokoku o chushin ni* (‘History of Ivory Carving in Japan: Gebori-okimono and Shibayama of the Meiji Period’), Tokyo, 1996. He is best known for his okimono depicting female subjects. Examples for comparison include the three okimono sold at the following auctions: Bonhams London, 12 May 2016, lots 618 and 626, and Tajan, 21 February 2019, lot 1; these three examples depict, respectively, a dancer, a musician, and a mother with her children.
