Description
A small square box with rounded corners, made of dark wood; the lid is decorated with a dragon in relief, the sides adorned with stylised clouds against a chequered background of lozenges, with a double signature on the base: Kanô Seisen Hôin hitsu and Nana juni-ô Sugaya Naomichi saku, ‘Painted by Kanô Seisen Hôin’ and ‘Made by Sugaya Naomichi at the age of 72’. (Presumably meaning that the box was made by Sugaya Naomichi based on a painting by Kanô Seisen). Japan, 19th century. Dimensions: 6.5 x 5.8 x 5.8 cm. Damage to the inner rim.
