A large polychrome painting on silk depicting the Buddha’s parinirvāṇa, illustrating his departure from earthly existence and showing him reclining on his right side, facing west (symbolising the final transcendence of the cycle of birth and death), amidst tall trees reaching up towards the clouds on a full-moon night, surrounded by disciples, deities and celestial beings, as well as terrestrial and mythical animals, all in deep mourning, weeping for the Buddha’s death.
