Description
CAULDON for Le Grand Dépôt d'Emile Bourgeois : Late 19th - early 20th century fine earthenware dinner service with printed floral design in bistre tones. Recessed manufacture's mark and dealer's stamp on the back. It includes: 81 dinner plates, 18 soup plates, 11 dishes (3 large, 1 deep and 3 oval), 1 soup tureen, 1 bowl, 2 ramekins and 1 sauceboat and its frame. Good condition overall, with some chipped edges, one cracked dish and some crazing. Brown-Westhead Moore & Co became Cauldon in 1904. In 1889 it won the Grand Prix de Paris for a set of earthenware sanitaryware with the same decoration as our service. Emile Bourgeois' Grand Depot had been importing fine earthenware from England since the 1860s, and obtained exclusive contracts with the largest earthenware manufacturers in Great Britain, such as Copeland and Minton. The retailer won awards at the Universal Exhibitions of 1878, 1885 and 1900.
