Description
Funerary stele surmounted by three acroteria. The central panel depicts in bas-relief a loutrophore (atypical as it is more closely related to a hydria) decorated with a Dexiosis scene (handshake as a sign of farewell) between a young woman and a child. The figures stand on a line of vase and are draped in a himation. The pediment of the stele is inscribed in Greek characters. Pentelic marble. Visible cracks, dents and wear. Greek art, Attica, first half of the 4th century BC. Dim. 84 x 33 x 10 cm. This type of loutrophore is extremely rare. Instead of two large symmetrical side handles, only one is shown, accompanied by two small handles similar to those found on hydria. It is similar to the Paramythion and Pheidiades stele in the Munich Glyptotheque. Expert : Antoine TARANTINO. Accompanied by its permanent export certificate from the D.G.P. dated 29 May 2026. Provenance: Villa l'Ermitage (former villa on the Mourillon in Toulon), 58 boulevard Eugène Pelletan, which included a greenhouse with a rockery, this element was set into the masonry. In the 19th century, this villa belonged to a sailor, before being purchased in 1905 by Léon Bournicard (an engineer at the La Seyne sur Mer shipyards) and his wife Joséphine, née Berthelet. It was then inherited by his nephews
