Description
MONNIER (Henry) (1799-1877). Passe-Temps. Very rare illustrated series by Henry Monnier, in two states, one of which is in colour. Paris, Delpech, (circa 1829). In-4 (320x250mm), full grey-blue pigeon waxed cloth, bradel, red morocco title-pieces pasted on top board and spine. 2ff. - 11 pl. - 2ff. ; with a loose lithograph of Gavarni's portrait of Monnier, published in "L'Artiste". Some foxing. The lithographs drawn by Henry Monnier are engraved by Delpech, mounted on mitre, numbered and captioned "Chacun prend son plaisir où il le trouve". Description of the plates: 1/ An elegant man spies women talking through a window on a snowy day; 2/ A top-hatted hunter sweats profusely in a pond, armed with a rifle and his faithful spaniel; 3/ A saltimbanque dressed in Turkish style looks on disconcerted as harlequins dance in the distance; 4/ A pot-bellied onlooker loses his eyes in the vague, while a spider weaves his fishing rod; 5/ A man schools a canary with the help of a music box; 6/ Woman with dogs /// Each black print is bound opposite the colour print, with the exception of no. 3 in colour only and no. 4 in triplicate, two of which are in black, before and after the letter. This series appears to be absent from public collections; the BNF holds only one copy of plate no. 2.
