Elegant Jansenist binding with mosaic lining by Salvador David, enclosing one of 80 copies on Arches vellum, containing 3 states of the etchings, and enriched with an original signed proof by Adrien Moreau.

In-4 (160x245 mm), cherry morocco, cold-framed ribbed spine, gold lettering, double gilt fillet on the edges, blue morocco lining decorated with a gilt fillet frame and a turquoise morocco listel accompanied by gilt flower garlands and two Phrygian bonnets embossed and mosaicked in red and burgundy morocco, signature "S. David. rel. dor" in gilt lettering, red moiré silk endpapers, double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, covers and spine, edged slipcase (S. David).
96 pages and 2 ff. (prospectus), 26 compositions by Adrien Moreau etched by Xavier Lesueur, including 1 title vignette (repeated on cover), 3 headbands, 5 hors-texte, 14 in-texte and 3 culs-de-lampe. Title printed in black and red.

First separate edition of this short story taken from L'Étui de nacre (1892), recounting the life of a man caught up in the whirlwind of the Revolution. It is illustrated with 26 compositions by the painter Adrien Moreau (1843-1906), finely etched by Xavier Lesueur. Limited edition of 400 copies, this being one of 80 copies on large Arches vellum or Japon (N°99 on Vellum) with 3 states of the etchings, including the pure etching.
A precious copy enriched with the publisher's illustrated prospectus and an original proof of the drawing forming the final cul-de-lampe, signed by the artist Adrien Moreau and mounted on a mitre after the justification.
Splendid lined and mosaic binding by Salvador David, in perfect condition.
