Luxurious Strasbourg edition of the "Odes" by the epicurean poet Horace, in a fine binding in the Bozerian taste. Printed on strong paper. Text compiled by Jérémie-Jacques Oberlin (1735-1806), a French philologist and archaeologist from Alsace, doctor of philosophy and librarian at the University of Strasbourg. With his "Odes", Horace abandoned the satirical style in favour of a lyricism tinged with self-mockery. The poet abandoned the iambe and the dactylic hexameter in favour of the major asclepiad verse, characteristic of lyric poetry, and the alcaic stanza (of four lines), which has been virtually unknown since. As well as singing the glory of Rome and Augustus' policy of pacification, Horace praises the happiness of an Epicurean life sheltered from the torments of the world and the vain pleasures of ambition and wealth. This is where he formulates the famous "Carpe diem", which is sometimes hastily summed up as the Epicurean philosophy. In it, the poet depicts himself as a swan taking flight with a solemnly burlesque emphasis.
Superb binding in the Bozerian style, very fresh inside.
