A very rare collection of political texts documenting the state of the kingdom of Castile and the city of Granada on the death of Felipe III. No mention of place or date, [1622]. In-8 (195x140mm), full grained calf, 4 ribbed spine, decorated boxes, spotted edges (contemporary binding). [5ff. 85ff. [2ff.] Corners dulled, spotting and cracking, headpieces missing, jaws split over a few centimetres, very good condition however. This is a collection of texts and speeches made by the representative of the city of Granada to the Cortes (assemblies of the 18 cities of the Crown of Castile) in 1621. Mateo de Lison y Biedma (1580 - 1641) was a Spanish nobleman and politician of the arbitrist movement - known as the Salamanca School - considered to be the first real movement in European economic literature. In 1621, he was appointed "Procurador" of the city of Granada, i.e. its representative, at the first Cortes convened after the death of Felipe III. He raised the issues of depopulation, excessive imports weakening the balance of trade, and high government spending. His opposition to Felipe IV's plans earned him a kabbalah led by the Count-Duke of Olivares, who exiled him to his lands in Algarinejo from 1627 until his death. The manuscript of these texts is kept in the National Library in Madrid.
